Last week I began work with the Dairy here at the Research Station. I have a good month ahead of me in the “teat puller” (a.k.a. milk transfer engineer) business, but will be doing much more than milking cows. A co-worker invited me out to his place to work some cows. We worked about 20 pairs, gave vaccines, dewormer, and I castrated the bull calves. Sometimes I swear God puts me in certain situations, just so I can learn my lesson. Too bad I'm pretty stubborn, and usually end up frustrated when I can't get things right. Southwest Airlines is "Sky High" with their customer service. No hitches or bumps in the road (minus the turbulence from the Tropical storm in the Gulf, but that's no one's fault) booking my flights or receiving regular updates on flight status. For the month of April, we have received just over 20 inches of rain at the ranch. That pretty much catches us up with our 15 inch deficiet from last year's drought and a dry start to 2011.

Tornado warnings, rain, hail, wind, floods, 30 degree temperature swings, lightning, and now sun! Everything but snow and fire. Guess I could light a match and shave some ice and fix that problem.

As soon as I steped out the door this morning, I figured there was a good size storm headed our way. We kept our 3 year-olds in a smaller pasture because they needed a closer eye during calving and all of our bulls are in smaller traps, so there's still a few bales to feed. It's a good thing the grass is turning green though. We have only 8 bales in one barn and 4 in another.

We've been working the last couple of weeks on riding and staying in the bed of the pickup. After a few hiccups, she finally stayed in the truck on her own will!
This dog absolutely refuses to stay in the pen. Its a weird feeling to have a house all to myself. And my horse has a paddock to herself. And Pistol has acres to roam (when she decides to stay around the house). 

Pistol seems to be warming up to the pen after I found the whole she was crawling through. Notice the gate is left open and she is still in the pen.
